Building a Hospital: A Labour of Love

The McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) is undergoing some major changes and is preparing for the biggest move in its history—neither of which could be achieved without our dedicated staff.

“The design, the transition, the move—none of it could have been accomplished without the support and input of our personnel at all levels and from all departments,” says Imma Franco, associate director, Programs and Services Planning, MUHC. “They contributed to the development of the Glen site in addition to all of their regular work and they are still working extremely hard to ensure a smooth transfer—this hospital really is a labour of love.”

Read below to find out what it has meant to some of our professionals to work on the creation of the Glen site.

Chantal Souligny, Nursing Coordinator, Respiratory Services, MUHC

I didn't hesitate at all when I was asked to contribute my time and clinical expertise to building our new hospital. The new collaborative relationships developed over the years between clinicians, architects, planners, engineers etc. is the strength of the Glen site and this will benefit our patients and staff.

Barbara Izzard, Associate Director of Nursing, Montreal Children’s Hospital, MUHC

The detailed design of the new hospital is truly a privilege. The architectural teams provided designs that captured what our professionals and families were asking for. We had so many colleagues willing to invest their precious time and vast experience to create our new children's hospital.  It was an energizing and heart-warming experience.

How is the Glen site a labour of love? The Glen is a very exciting project to be involved in, but it’s not just about concrete and steel, it’s about people; this project involves hundreds of clinicians and medical professionals from the MUHC, huge construction teams and the government. The interactions with these people and the many friendships that have developed over the past four years are the real jewels of this project and what makes the Glen a success. These interactions make coming in to work every day a pleasure.
