The MUHC Division of Urology leads a specialized network across several* McGill University teaching hospitals and is identified as the site of expertise for:
- urologic oncology
- endourology/stone disease, minimally invasive and robotic urologic treatment
- male reproductive therapies
In addition, patients with less complex conditions that fall within these clinical spheres are referred to this division.
Recognition
The Urologic Oncology team is internationally recognized, with leading surgeons, a clinician scientist, and participation in:
- Quebec’s Prostate Cancer Biobank Project
- Societe Internationale d’Urologie
- Canadian Bladder Cancer Network - with 10 academic institutions.
The McGill Prostate Cancer Centre of Excellence is located at the MUHC. The McGill University Health Centre Research Institute (MUHC-RI) is home to the Urologic Oncology Research Laboratories, where five full-time scientists work in close collaboration with clinicians.
Minimally Invasive Surgery
The Urology Division’s Minimally Invasive treatment for Kidney Stone Disease and laser treatment of Benign Prostate Hyperplasia (BPH) is internationally acclaimed. The endoscopic facilities also provide key support in urologic cancer care.
Innovation
The Division conducts clinical trials to evaluate different technologies and medical therapies. These provide evidence-based medicine for urologic practice world-wide. The MUHC is frequently consulted when companies wish to introduce new technologies.
Male Reproductive Medicine
Male reproductive Biology at the MUHC has one of the most successful reproductive outcomes world-wide. The multidisciplinary coordination of clinical/research activities is well established. The Urology section of the MUHC Research Institute is home to male reproductive biology laboratories that have a sustained record of achievement.
Currently, clinical activities in male reproductive medicine have the following components:
- Fertility preservation counselling
- Fertility counselling
- Surgical sperm retrieval for IVF/ICSI
- Vasectomy
- Non-IVF related fertility surgeries
