Montreal, April 15, 2013 – Ten doctors from the McGill University Health Centre delivered spectacular dance performances at the second edition of the hospital’s popular fundraiser Dancing with the Docs, which took place Saturday April 13 at La TOHU.

It was a packed house at the Mardi Gras-themed evening, which raised $190,000 for the hospital’s Best Care for Life Campaign.

Dr. Christos Karatzios, a physician in the Division of Infectious Diseases at the Montreal Children's Hospital was crowned the winner for his performance of a sexy Samba Salsa routine with his Arthur Murray Dance Schools partner Patty Contenta.

“I am so thankful for the opportunity to have been part of Dancing with the Docs – it was an incredible evening and so exciting to perform in front of friends and colleagues," said Dr. Karatzios. "The MUHC family came out to support me and my nine colleagues and allowed us to raise needed funds for The Best Care for Life Campaign, all while dancing having a great time. It was icing on the cake to be able to keep the first place trophy at the Montreal Children's Hospital for the second year, but in my mind all of the doctors who participated are winners and should be very proud.”

MUHC Emergency Department physician and toxicologist Dr. Sophie Gosselin finished in second place, while Dr. Claudia Giambattistini, clinical instructor of the Orthodontics Division of the Dental Residency Program at the Royal Victoria Hospital, earned third spot.

Modelled after the hit TV show Dancing with the Stars, the evening saw the doctors face off against one another in a friendly dance competition, cheered on by their colleagues, patients and other supporters. The doctors and their professional dance partners from the Arthur Murray Dance Schools gave crowd-pleasing performances, featuring everything from the Foxtrot and Cha Cha to tributes to Dirty Dancing and James Bond.

The dancers faced a panel of celebrity judges made up of Jean-Marc Généreux, the choreographer and judge from the TV show So You Think You Can Dance, CTV News Anchor Mutsumi Takahashi, CJAD 800 morning host Andrew Carter, and international dance champion Méryem Pearson. Mosé Persico, entertainment host on CTV News, once again did a fantastic job as emcee.

Also in attendance was Dr. Réjean Hébert, Minister of Health and Social Services, who was the honorary chairman of the event.

These are the dancing doctors who represented the different sites and missions of the MUHC:

  • Dr. Claudette Bardin – Program head of the Medical Day Hospital and the Pediatric Consultation Service at the Montreal Children’s Hospital
  • Dr. Liliana Diaz – Emergency Department physician at the Lachine Hospital
  • Dr. Claudia Giambattistini – Clinical instructor of the Orthodontics Division of the Dental Residency Program of the Royal Victoria Hospital

  • Dr. Silvia Rios Romenets – Clinical research fellow at the Movement Disorder Program, Neurology Department, MUHC

“On behalf of the entire MUHC community, I would like to thank and congratulate these 10 doctors, many of whom removed themselves from their comfort zone and invested their own time to represent their mission and site while giving back to the hospital in such a courageous way. These individuals reflect the selflessness and commitment to patient care that is displayed across the MUHC,” said Normand Rinfret, director general and CEO of the MUHC.  “We are also extremely grateful to our wonderful judges and our emcee for returning for a second year.”

“We thank the Minister for presiding over this annual event and delivering such a heartfelt and encouraging speech,” Rinfret added.

Event co-chair and MUHC director of professional services, Dr. Ewa Sidorowicz, said the event once again sparked friendly competition between the hospitals sites and missions, but also fostered a sense of camaraderie amongst all who were there. “We are thankful to our guests, our sponsors, the 100 volunteers who made the night possible and of course our 10 courageous doctors. Together we raised thousands of dollars to support the New MUHC, which includes new equipment, a new hospital site and new facilities for our Research Institute, enhanced teaching spaces and an expansion of the Montreal General and Lachine hospitals – all of which will greatly improve patient care for all Montrealers and Quebecers.”

Karen Netherton, event co-chair and vice-president of Novartis, is calling on the community to join her by becoming more involved in our hospitals. “To ensure world-class care for all Quebecers, we must all play a role by volunteering, donating, and by taking part in events such as this one that strengthen the bond between hospital and community. The new MUHC hospital at the Glen will be one of the best in the world – one that will benefit us all directly. I am proud to have contributed to its success, as should everyone who has already become involved.”
