Royal Victoria Hospital Auxiliary makes historic $1 million donation to The Best Care for Life Campaign

This is the largest contribution in the Auxiliary’s 167-year history

The Auxiliary of the Royal Victoria Hospital is pleased to announce a $1 million donation to the McGill University Health Centre’s (MUHC) Best Care for Life Campaign, making this the largest contribution in the Auxiliary’s 167-year history.

In recognition of the donation, the MUHC will name the 12-bed pod of the Antepartum and Postpartum Care Unit at the Glen site in honour of the Auxiliary. On this unit, mother and baby will be in the same room and perinatologists will be able to carefully monitor both typical and high-risk pregnancies before and after birth.

Donna Carroll, president of The Auxiliary of the Royal Victoria Hospital said, “The Auxiliary of the Royal Victoria Hospital can trace its roots to 1844 and the Montreal Maternity Hospital. This gift celebrates both our history and our commitment to the future of health care in the Montreal community. We are thrilled to be part of this fabulous project.”

Normand Rinfret, interim director general and CEO of the MUHC, praised the Auxiliary’s generosity, saying the contribution comes during an exciting period of transformation for the Royal Victoria Hospital and the MUHC as a whole. “This donation marks a milestone in the evolution of the Royal Victoria Hospital and celebrates the close and important relationship that the hospital and the Auxiliary have shared for many years,” he said.

At the Glen site, all women’s health services will be on the same floor and the pediatric intensive care units from the Montreal Children’s and the Royal Victoria hospitals will merge to create one of the most advanced units in the province to care for the most vulnerable newborns.

In thanking the Auxiliary, John A. Rae, chair of The Best Care for Life Campaign, said, “It is fitting that, through this naming opportunity, the Auxiliary’s legacy of generosity will be put on display for all to see for many years to come.”

Alex K. Paterson, honorary co-chair of The Best Care for Life Campaign added, “This is a remarkable example of leadership at the grassroots level and we hope it will inspire others to follow in the Auxiliary’s footsteps.”

The Auxiliary of the Royal Victoria Hospital has contributed greatly to the hospital over the years with the purchase of crucial equipment that has led to improvements in patient care. Examples include the purchase of a high-resolution ultrasound machine used by the obstetrics and gynecology department, emergency department stretchers, an endoscopy electrosurgical generator, blanket warmers, neonatal ICU incubators and operating room tables.
