The Canadian Foundation for Healthcare Improvement (CFHI) supports the MUHC's projects to get patients and families involved

The McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) has been chosen as one of 22 teams from health organizations across Canada

The McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) has been chosen as one of 22 teams from health organizations across Canada that will work with patients and their families on quality improvement initiatives.

Representatives from the MUHC's Neurosciences and Cancer Care Missions and from its Department of Quality, Patient Safety, and Performance will form one of the teams chosen by the CFHI to leverage the tremendous potential of patient and family involvement to improve the quality and effectiveness of health care services.

The CFHI's “Partnering with Patients and Families for Quality Improvement” initiative will provide funding for the start-up and support of the MUHC's program, including the evaluation and framework. This support will come from a group of experts in the field who are based in different organizations across Canada. This collaboration between selected teams and experts will help the MUHC adopt recognized best practices to involve patients and their families in its quality improvement processes.

In practical terms, this MUHC project stems from a desire to apply past experience to ongoing projects that get patients involved in quality improvement. A number of projects have been recently launched at the MUHC to promote patient participation in quality improvement, such as the Transforming Care at the Bedside program, which was implemented under the CFHI's Patient & Family Engagement initiative.

The specific goals of this project include establishing patient- and family-centred care as an organizational priority as well as educating patients, clinicians and staff about how to work as partners while carrying out quality improvement initiatives. The lessons learned from these initiatives will become integral to the MUHC's quality improvement program and ensure that patients remain part of the MUHC improvement process for a long time to come.

The MUHC is proud to receive support from the CFHI for the second time for a patient and family partnership project. This project will run until December 2015.
