Men's Health Awareness Day @ the Glen!

MONTREAL, June 13, 2019 – In the time it takes most people to browse their Instagram or Facebook page, men can have their prostate checked. This examination can detect the presence of prostate diseases - such as infection and enlargement - that can cause urination problems or, even, prostate cancer, which can be safely and successfully treated if caught early enough.

In short, a 10-second checkup could save a life.

This is the message MUHC urologist Dr. Peter Chan is using to encourage men to attend the 13th annual Men’s Health Awareness Day, which will be held during the Father’s Day week on Thursday, June 13, 2019, at the Glen site of the MUHC between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.

Men and women of all ages can learn about various men’s health conditions in addition to prostate diseases such as testis cancer, erectile dysfunction, male infertility, hypogonadism (“low-T”), and other diseases more commonly seen in men, including bladder and kidney cancers. The first 200 adult male participants with a valid RAMQ card can take advantage of a free health check-up which includes blood pressure and fitness assessment, urine and blood tests, and urological examinations.

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer among Canadian men – about 1-in-7 men will develop prostate cancer during their lifetime, and 1-in-28 will die from it. But the rate of survival is at nearly 100 per cent if caught early enough, which is why the prostate exam is so important.

Since its launch in 2006, Dr. Chan and his team have examined over 2,000 men at Men’s Health Awareness Day, with many having significant health issues unbeknown to them that required further assessment and treatment.
