For many patients, the hospital experience will begin with some form of emergency. All the skills and essential services of the emergency department will come in to play from the time the patient is first examined to when treatment begins, whether for serious trauma or referral to a specialist.

As it turns out, those core support services, including pharmacy for medication, biochemistry for lab tests, and microbiology for the diagnosis of infections, are also on call to the vast array of clinical departments that make up a complex hospital.
