“Seventy per cent of a physician’s critical decision is based on lab results,” says Brigitte Désilets-Brunelle, manager of the Lachine Labs for the past two years. “Therefore, our results must be 100 per cent reliable and that’s why we have such high quality standards.” As a manager, her role is to make sure that everything is running smoothly in the lab, whether it is staff, equipment, budget, procedures, and so on.

When asked why she chose to work at the Lachine Hospital, Ms. Désilets-Brunelle says it’s because it offers her the possibility to work with every specialty of the lab (for example, Pathology and Blood Bank) and broadens her knowledge. “In addition, with a small team at the Lachine Campus, when we have to introduce a change of practice, the implementation is much faster than in a larger group,” she adds. For the future, Ms. Desilets-Brunelle has a lot of projects, such as assisting in standardizing the biochemistry equipment at the MUHC and she is looking toward creating a Core Lab, which would help the efficiency and quality of services.
