Too many men put off getting a complete health exam, which can lead to neglecting treatment for a range of health issues. MUHC (McGill University Health Centre) urologist Dr. Peter Chan and a volunteer team of 20 doctors and nurses want to make it easy for men to look after their health. To that end, they are holding the 7th Annual Public Men’s Health Exam on Thursday, June 14, 2012 at Alexis Nihon Plaza.

Men carrying a valid Quebec Medicare card may take the exam, which lasts approximately 40 minutes and includes blood pressure and cholesterol checks, as well as a prostate exam for men over 40. All participants will receive a response to their tests within six weeks. Participants whose results indicate a reason for follow up will be contacted sooner. To date, Dr. Chan and his team of volunteers have tested approximately 3000 men, of which half have been contacted to suggest a follow up with their doctor.

To help raise awareness of the event this year, beloved Montreal-based comedian Joey Elias will be taking the exam, including his first prostate check. Asked how he plans to prepare, Joey said, “I will get a Brazilian; it’s the least I can do for Dr. Chan.” He added on a more serious note, “The time it takes to check my prostate could be the one of the most valuable ways to spend 10 seconds … it could literally save my life.”
