Montreal, January 19, 2009 -- The McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) extends today its heartfelt sympathies to the McGarrigle family on the sad occasion of the death of one of the MUHC’s strongest supporters, Kate McGarrigle.

The beloved and award-winning singer-songwriter—and devoted mother, grandmother, sister, and friend—succumbed to her illness on Monday night, surrounded by loved ones, after a long and courageous battle with sarcoma.

“Kate exuded warmth and an incredible spirit”, said the Hon. Arthur T. Porter, MUHC Director General and CEO. ”Her music and devotion to family struck a chord with thousands of people. I, for one, will always remember her emotional performance with Rufus and Martha last fall at the Cedars Cancer Heroes Night. A bright light, Kate will be sorely missed.”

In 2008, Kate established the Kate McGarrigle Fund in partnership with the MUHC Foundation and the Cedars Cancer Institute to raise dollars and public awareness for the fight against sarcoma. Since then, the Fund has raised nearly $140,000 supporting advanced research and
patient care of this rare and devastating form of cancer at the McGill University Health, the Jewish General Hospital and Cancer Research UK. This past December, $55,000 of this total was raised at the McGarrigle and Wainright family’s annual Christmas concert – A Not So Silent Night. The much-lauded event which took place at the Royal Albert Hall was Kate’s last public performance.

“Kate’s generosity and support for her fellow cancer sufferers, despite her own illness, was an inspiration to all of us,” said John A. Rae, Chairman of The Best Care for Life Campaign for the MUHC. “We are proud to be able to support her legacy by directing donations to the Kate McGarrigle Fund to the construction of a new, state-of-the-art Comprehensive Cancer Centre at the MUHC’s Glen Campus.”
