MONTREAL, June 13, 2011 – The McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) is delighted with the initiatives put forward by the City of Montreal as part of its 2011-2017 Economic Development Strategy, the blueprint for which Mayor Gérald Tremblay unveiled this morning. The MUHC is very proud to be partnering with the City in redevelopment projects for its three hospital sites, all of which will contribute to the health and wellbeing of Montrealers and Quebecers at large: the brand new Glen Site, the Montreal General Hospital, and the Lachine Hospital. The City’s values and objectives will without question enable the MUHC to grow and further excel.

“As a leading academic health centre, the MUHC attracts experts from around the world who move to Montreal with their families and contribute not only to the economy and caregiving environment in Montreal, but also to the world’s knowledge and understanding of complex diseases,” stated the Hon. Arthur T. Porter, MUHC Director General and CEO. “We’re proud that the City of Montreal recognizes the value of our Redevelopment Project as part of its Economic Development Strategy and we encourage all Montrealers to support it through The Best Care for Life campaign.”

The Glen Site, which will become a 2.37 million square foot building on 43 acres, has been under construction for close to a year.  Built according to strict environmental standards and aiming for LEED certification (Silver), the site will promote health, innovation and collaboration, while playing a key role in the recruitment and retention of the best clinical and research personnel in the world.

The MUHC has put patients and their families first during the design of its new facilities. For example, private rooms will offer intimacy, comfort and privacy, while enabling family members and loved ones to be more involved in the delivery of care. Outside the rooms, carefully selected colours and works of art along with specially arranged gardens will contribute to the warm and welcoming atmosphere.

Beyond the Glen Site, the Redevelopment Project at the Montreal General Hospital foresees a new, streamlined emergency department and state-of-the-art operating rooms. In addition to the private patient rooms that will be built, the facility will offer a number of green spaces that will contribute to the creation of welcoming environments to promote healing.  Meantime, the Lachine Hospital will continue to fulfill its vocation as a community hospital, while benefiting from updated facilities, a 30% increase in its floor space, and leading-edge infrastructures and equipment.
