Montreal investigators share in $8.7 million grant from the CIHR for HIV research

ribbonDecember 1st marks World AIDS Day, a time to people to unite in the fight against HIV, to support those people with HIV, and to commemorate those who have died. This year, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) has awarded a grant of $8.7 million over five years to 10 HIV researchers in Montreal, including to Dr. Jean-Pierre Routy, HIV pathogenesis expert at the Royal Victoria Hospital.

This research project entitled Canadian HIV Cure Enterprise (CanCURE)– a collaboration of leading Canadian HIV researchers aimed at finding new approaches to curing HIV infection– will be led by Dr. Eric Cohen at the Institut de recherches cliniques de Montréal (IRCM).

“We are very pleased that the government of Canada has decided to make such an important investment in developing a cure for HIV,” said Dr. Routy. “With $8.7 million, this is a very significant amount of funding for such research. This is a great day for HIV research in Canada, and a great day for researchers like me who are affiliated with McGill, because we have collectively been awarded 40% of the total grant.”
