Dr. Maurice McGregor recognized for contributions to Health Technology Assessment

Dr. McGregor, McGill University professor emeritus and recently retired chair of the Technology Assessment Unit of the McGill University Health Centre, was honoured by the Canadian Agency for Drugs and Technologies in Health (CADTH) during a lunchtime ceremony at the annual CADTH Symposium on Tuesday, April 8, 2014.

In addition to being one of 10 recipients of the CADTH Anniversary Medal, given to individuals who have played a pioneering role in health technology assessment (HTA) in Canada, Dr. McGregor was honoured this year with the creation of a new CADTH award in his name. The Maurice McGregor Award will now be given annually to recognize ‘rising stars’ in the field of HTA.

The CADTH Recognition Awards program was inaugurated in 2010 and in 2011 Dr. McGregor was a recipient of the Dr. Jill M. Sanders Award of Excellence in Health Technology Assessment for his significant and lasting contribution to health technology assessment, evidence-based drug reviews or optimal technology utilization in Canada. The creation of the Maurice McGregor Award recognizes Dr. McGregor’s pioneering contribution to health care and Health Technology Assessment.

Maurice McGregor, OC,CQ,MB, BCh, MD, FRCP(C), FRCP(Lond), FACC joined the faculty of McGill University in 1957 and has served terms as Head of Cardiology, and Physician in Chief of the Royal Victoria Hospital and as Dean of Medicine and Vice Principal of McGill University. He has published over 180 articles, chiefly in the fields of cardiovascular disease, cardiovascular physiology and pharmacology, medical education and health policy.

Dr. McGregor has had experience as both a consumer and a producer of HTAs and Clinical Practice Guidelines as a member of numerous hospitals’ Governing Boards and as the founding President of Quebec’s HTA agency, the Conseil d’évaluation des technologies de la santé du Québec, a founding Board member of the Canadian Coordinating Office for Health Technology Assessment, and Chair and Editor of Canada's Guidelines for the Management of Breast Cancer.
