Sustainable Development

The goal of the MUHC’s Redevelopment Project is to build something bigger than a health care centre; it is an opportunity to create a truly healing environment.

Already a leader in energy-efficiency management, and with a number of environmental certifications to its name, the MUHC chose to design and operate its new hospital campuses according to the requirements of the LEED® program (silver level), an international standard in sustainable development.

In addition to reducing water consumption and integrating geothermal power into its facilities—a first for a Quebec hospital—the MUHC will focus on improving energy efficiency and indoor air quality as well as ensuring that its sites are environmentally friendly, that they effectively use materials and resources, and that they are conscious about environmental protection.

In terms of accessibility, there will be a shift towards active and public transportation and easy access for pedestrians. Bicycle paths will be created at or close to the sites (which will also be equipped with bicycle parking), while car pooling will also be encouraged. Visitors and staff will be able to commute directly by metro or train via a pedestrian link at the Vendôme intermodal station (the orange Metro line, 11 bus routes, and three commuter train lines).

The MUHC therefore plans to go beyond the borders of sustainable development to create spaces that lend themselves to healing and enhance the workplace while helping the environment. As a public institution and a member of the community, the MUHC wants to make sure that both patients and the environment receive the care and respect they deserve.
