Lecture by Dr. Mark Ware, Director of Research at the MUHC Pain Clinic Assistant Professor in Anesthesia and Family Medicine, McGill University December 6, 2006
The medical use of cannabis (marijuana) is a topic of great interest to clinicians, scientists, politicians, lawmakers and the general public. Recent understanding of the mechanisms by which cannabis works on pain has led to renewed interest in the development of “cannabinoid” drugs. Dr. Ware describes the most significant research developments and breakthroughs in the use of cannabis as a treatment for chronic pain, and details the safety concerns and health consequences of this controversial medication. Dr. Mark Ware is a world authority on the potential medical uses of cannabis. He completed his medical training at the University of the West Indies, and conducted graduate work in Jamaica and the UK. Dr. Ware’s research program on cannabis extends across Canada. He is the Scientific Director of the Canadian Consortium for the Investigation of Cannabinoids. Dr. Ware’s research is funded in part by the CIHR.
