Guest: Wendy Wray (MUHC nurse clinician)
It was International Women’s Day yesterday – a global day celebrating the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future. Did you know the first International Women’s Day was in 1911? On Health Matters we thought we’d celebrate the achievement of women by talking to nurse clinician Wendy Wray, about the Women’s Healthy Heart Clinic at the MUHC.
It’s a common misconception that heart disease and heart attacks are male afflictions. The reasons are two-fold: firstly, until recently, women were under-represented in heart-related studies, which mean the data we have corresponds mainly to men. Additionally the symptoms of a female heart attack are often different from men. Men suffer the classic symptoms of chest pain and shortness of breath, whereas women are more likely to feel fatigue, and even flu-like symptoms, which can lead to under-diagnosis. Our chat with Wendy Wray is a real eye-opener!
Our guest interviews follow the World News In Three Medical Minutes – a regular feature on Health Matters where we summarize the cutting edge medical stories making headlines around the world.
