Guests: Dr. Peter Chan (MUHC urologist and prostate cancer expert) and Jay Bouvier (cancer survivor)
Today we learn about Men’s Health and the cringe-worthy prostate check-up. Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among Canadian men. This year, nearly 25,000 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer and 4,300 will die because of it, yet the disease is 95% curable if detected and treated in the early stages.
A simple health check-up can make the world of difference, but for some reason men are wimps and many avoid seeing a doctor at all costs. This is just one of the reasons that Dr. Chan – an MUHC urologist and prostate cancer expert – takes the urology team on the road, bringing prostate checks to the patients, rather than patients to the prostate check.
This year the MUHC Men’s Health Day event will be held at Place Ville Marie mall in downtown Montreal on June 18, from 9am-5pm. This event is open to the public free of charge. For a free health check-up, simply bring a valid Quebec Medicare card. Dr. Chan joins us in the studio to tell us more. Also on the show today is Jay Bouvier – a lymphoma cancer survivor. He gives his take on the importance of annual health checks and talks about his involvement in Dr. Chan fertility preservation research project.
Our guest interviews follow the World News In Three Medical Minutes – a regular feature on Health Matters where we summarize the cutting edge medical stories making headlines around the world.
