  1. Vitamin D & Crohn’s Disease: DR. JOHN WHITE, Molecular Geneticist, Research Institute, MUHC. Vitamin D might be a crucial element in preventing Crohn’s. The active form of Vitamin D stimulates an innate immune response – led to the finding that Vitamin D stimulates the over-production of protein that affects Crohn’s disease.
  2. Urinary Tract infections from chicken not boyfriends: AMEE MANGES, Medical Scientist at MUHC Research Institute, Division of Infectious Diseases. There’s a new reason why women might be getting UTIs - could be caused by E. Coli. UTIs are usually associated with frequent sexual activity in young women BUT a recent study found that it may be caused by foods that are affected with E. Coli – and when these young women are sexually active, the E. Coli is what triggers the reaction.
  3. HPV’s love new relationships: DR. ANNE BURCHELL, Post doctorate Fellow at McGill’s Cancer Epidemiology Unit. Dr Burchell focuses her HPV study on couples – wants to understand how the disease is transmitted and how commonly it’s transmitted. 66% of men and women have at least 1 HPV type; 44% had an HPV type that could cause cancer.
  4. Getting trained to help in Haiti: DR. TAREK RAZEK, Chief, Adult Trauma, MUHC. Helpers must have special training to be able to provide treatment. Red Cross does the training with their Emergency Response Team. Canada doesn’t have field hospitals – we work with Sweden and Norway – thus Canada provides personnel

  6. Women’s Healthy Heart Clinic: WENDY WRAY, Director, women’s Healthy Heart Initiative Clinic, MUHC. The Clinic is geared for primary prevention for women to reduce risks of heart disease. The 1st of its kind in Canada: primary prevention, nurse-led, the target population is specifically women.
