Cedars Cancer Institute launches new Friends for the Cure Family Room at MUHC oncology unit
The Cedars Cancer Institute Board of Directors, volunteers and supporters along with Alexia and Anthony Calvillo gathered on November 10, 2010 to celebrate the inauguration and tour of the newly- renovated FRIENDS FOR THE CURE FAMILY ROOM at the Montreal General Hospital’s (MGH) 17th floor east Hemato-Oncology Inpatient Unit.
On behalf of the cancer patients of the MUHC and their families, Cedars is ever so grateful to Friends for the Cure whose generous donation along with big-hearted support from quarterback great Anthony Calvillo and his wife Alexia, has made this renovation possible.
Friends for the Cure is a grassroots organization that has supported Cedars initiatives since 1999. Founded by Montreal General Hospital operating room nurse and cancer survivor Tina Lamanuzzi, the group has raised over $1.5 million through its popular Valentine Dinner Dance which is attended by 800 plus supporters every February.
“At Cedars we know the importance of comfort and support for patients and loved ones who are dealing with a cancer diagnosis. Our commitment is to provide facilities, equipment and programs that help ease the burden caused by this difficult disease. Cedars thanks Friends for the Cure and the Calvillos whose generosity will provide a calm and comfortable environment at the MGH for patients to meet with their loved ones,” said Jeff Shamie, Cedars Executive Director.
Tina Lamanuzzi also stated: “Having been through cancer treatments myself, I understand how comforting a home environment can be to a cancer patient and the positive impact such a room can have on the healing process. Over the last 10 years Friends for the Cure have been raising monies in support of Cedars CanSupport and this year we decided to use the funds to help families and patients during their hospital stay.”
